British tax for misfueling

Misfueling is the reason why over 155 thousand vehicles break down every year.

At the beginning of 2009 over 34 million vehicles were registered in Great Britain, which is 0.7 percent more than the previous year.

A quarter of all vehicles in Great Britain run on diesel fueled engines, and the number is increasing annually. Last year 2.7 million vehicles were newly registered and 43 percent of these vehicles had a diesel fueled engine.

7.5 million liters of diesel ends up in the trash

During the last ten year the number of misfueling incidents in Great Britain doubled. This accounts for 7.5 million liters of extracted »dirty«, useless fuel each year.

Three Olympic swimming pools could be filled with the contaminated fuel, which is extracted and discarded. Since the problem of misfueling is increasing continually, the English Automobile Association (AA) spent two million Euro to purchase special vehicles, specialized for helping the people with this kind of problem.

Specially trained teams complete approximately five interventions a day, 99 percent of the vehicles are “put back on their feet” in a little over an hour. The drivers have to pay approximately €200 for this service.

The AA Fuel Assist vehicle is also equipped with 330 liters of fuel and the statistics tell us that they help about 60 thousand people who have misfuel out of about 150 thousand drivers who misfuel in England each year. This is three times as much as those who call AA Fuel Assist because they “only” ran out of fuel on the road.

These kinds of accidents can be prevented by a special cap SoloDiesel (www.solodiesel.eu), which prevents the use of the wrong fueling nozzle.

Aircraft owners also misfuel

American Aircraft owners and Pilots Association, AOPA, is reporting that misfueling occurs at least three times a day, especially with the owners of smaller aircrafts across the USA.

Fuels for motor aircrafts or jet aircrafts are visibly different in colour – red, yellow, blue or black. Nevertheless, the information on the misfueling tells us that the pilots are usually not present when fueling their aircrafts.

Is there a pilot on the plane?

It is interesting that 65 percent of pilots are present when they instruct the maintenance crew to replace the oil, 50 percent of the pilots oversee the air pressure control in the aircraft tires, but only 39 percent are with their “bird” when it is being refueled. They usually just give the instructions and leave.

The AOPA Association recommends that pilots should check the fuel receipt before taking off, since the receipt tells them what kind of fuel was filled. They can also check the fuel visually, according to the colour or maybe even according to a distinctive smell.

Perhaps the SoloDiesel cap (www.solodiesel.eu) should be developed for aircrafts as well.

The problem of misfueling is increasing

There are over 65 million diesel vehicles in the countries of the European Union. About a million a year break down due to misfueling.

Ten year ago only one tenth of all vehicles in Great Britain had a diesel engine; today the number climbed over 43 percent. The sale of vehicles with a diesel engine is increasing. Only a few years ago Mercedes car's salesmen recorded only 12 percent sale of models with a diesel engine, today they sell over 35 percent of vehicles with a diesel engine.

The increasing number of diesel fueled vehicles also means an increased problem of misfueling. The petrol stations tried to solve the misfueling problems years ago by introducing black nozzles for the diesel fuel and green nozzles for the petrol fuel. But the driver of a car with a diesel engine should not rely upon it. The nozzles break down and the repair men sometimes “turn” the colours because the nozzles are scarce. The diesel nozzle becomes red or green, the petrol nozzle becomes black and so forth.

The only solution to this is professional staff with the device for extracting the fuel, but in most cases at least a portion of the engine has to be cleaned thoroughly as well. These kinds of accidents can be prevented by a special cap SoloDiesel (www.solodiesel.eu), which prevents the use of the wrong fueling nozzle.

A few hundred meters is too far with the wrong fuel

Don't drive or start your engine if you notice a misfueling mistake.

If a driver starts the engine with the wrong fuel and even makes a few hundred meters or even kilometers, this extends the cleaning period, and it also increases the possible damage to the pump and engine itself.

It is more dangerous for a driver to fill a diesel engine with petrol than it is to fill a petrol engine with diesel fuel. It is enough to drive a few hundred meters with the wrong fuel in the car's fuel tank. The wrong fuel (petrol) will get into all of the most important parts of the installation and into the engine itself.

A longer and more expensive healing process

When petrol comes into contact with the cylinders of a diesel engine it takes longer to “heal” it and a lot more work. The petrol fumes do not combust in the diesel engine despite the high compression ratio level, since they need a spark to do it. If a driver, who filled the diesel engine with petrol, realizes his mistake only when the engine begins to “cough” and when it stops it is most likely that excessive friction occurred in the engine already as well as damage to the fueling system.

Petrol does not have the same lubricating qualities as crude oil. In this case the entire fueling system needs to be cleaned and in some extreme cases some parts have to be replaced as well. The first thing to do when the driver sees the mistake is to stop the engine and call the tow service.

This mistake of misfueling, of course, can be avoided with the installation of the SoloDiesel cap (www.solodiesel.eu).

Do not unlock your car doors after misfueling!

Newer models of diesel-fueled cars automatically start the pre-preparation process of igniting the engine, the spark begins to warm up and the fuel is injected as soon as the car doors are unlocked. If the fuel is wrong the engine could get damaged and your wallet gets hit with a (larger) bill.

It is a known fact that the diesel fuel lubricates the mobile parts of the engine (the pumps), while petrol fuel doesn't, which causes “dry” friction between different metals and it damages the engine. Many people believe that misfueling cannot happen to them. The statistics tell a different story.

Across Great Britain wrong fuel sends 155 thousand cars to the repair shops each year. The latest technology erased all notable differenced between diesel and petrol fueled engines, such as noise, the characteristic smoke and smells coming from the engine. This can easily cause a driver used to cars with petrol propulsion, to simply forget to use the black nozzle for the diesel fuel when refueling when changing or borrowing a car.

Misfueling cannot occur with the SoloDiesel cap, since it physically prevents you from inserting the narrower petrol fuel nozzle into the opening used for diesel fuel.

When we see that something is wrong!

Misfueling is a mistake that we don't even know we made, before is to late. Watch out and pay attention to the behavior of your car, to prevent more damage.

Sometimes we don't even know that we misfueled before is to late. We usually just fill up and drive away.

The signs showing us that the car is misfueled are:
  • the engine is losing power,
  • smoke starts coming from the exhaust pipe,
  • the electronics record a fuel pressure drop and it switches to the auxiliary operations,
  • the engine works unevenly,
  • the dashboard shows warning lights signaling that something is wrong.

The driver can continue to drive to the nearest repair shop with the use of auxiliary operations, but is more recommendable to remove the car from the road immediately and use the tow service to take into the repair shop. There they clean the fuel tank, the fueling system and they also have to check the pump, which is the most exposed part when misfueling.

It is more dangerous for a driver who filed the fuel tank with some wrong fuel if the problems with the engine operations are less obvious and the car is operational (for a longer period of time). This increases the possibility for a total destruction of the pump or of the fuel injection jet.

So watch out what are you doing, and listen to your car behaviour! Or even better, avoid the possible mistake and install the SoloDiesel cap (www.solodiesel.eu)!

How to prevent misfueling?

Misfueling can cost us a lot of money! We have to take some actions to prevent misfueling mistakes. But why do we make such mistakes, and how we can learn from mistakes others made?!

Misfueling occurs mostly because the driver is distracted, she had a stressful day, not concentrating (maybe talking on the phone, talking to passengers, beautiful girl, full moon..)

We all know somebody that knows someone that misfueled at least once, every other person knows someone who did it. We are after all just humans, we make mistakes, misfueling is just one of them, but can cost us a lot of money. Companies are testing different methods for preventing misfueling. For this purpose the diesel nozzle is usually wider and the nozzle is black, but...!

The colours are not reliable!

The petrol nozzle is usually green.. Usually! But I saw that some petrol stations understand this color scheme in their own way. Because of nozzle malfunctions certain colors can be switched with a different kind, the one available at the moment.

Some newer serial vehicles were also equipped with a special opening for the fueling of the “right” fuel. This did not work very well because these vehicles were sold to markets in some countries, which do not follow the approved standards. We can also read on the cap, what is the right fuel for our vehicle. But, let's be honest! I barely notice the sign, and how can people understand English in other countries. That can be a problem..!

Different shapes of funnels?

One of the possible solutions considered by the experts is also different shaped funnels. They would be triangular for the diesel fuel (the nuzzle would be the same shape) and the petrol nozzle would remain the same. Car and nuzzle manufacturers would have to invest a lot of money into this kind of project. But that does not make much sense. Misfueling is, after all, not their mistake!

This kind of mistake can be avoided by fitting the SoloDiesel cap.(www.solodiesel.eu), it can save us a lot of money and nerves!

Misfueling??? What?

How does misfueling mistake occur?

The diameter of the petrol gas nozzle is narrower of the diesel one
, therefore it is physically possible to insert petrol gas nozzle into a wider opening of the diesel tank and fill it with the false type of fuel.

Stress, telephone conversations and frequent changing of cars are the most common causes of filling the tank with the false type of gas.

Why does the wrong type of fuel damage the car?

Petrol fuel disrupts the process of lubrication of a diesel engine and causes damage to metal parts. This can cause serious damage on the fuel pump and the system for fuel injection. In the event of longer motor operation it can lead to complete destruction of a diesel engine. After the performed extraction of the false fuel one must check all washers and filters, which are frequently destroyed as well as the entire system for direct fuel injection.
